Freeware
Slope Stability
- SLOPE/W 2007 Student Edition is a free product designed as an aid to learning geotechnical numerical modeling. (Note that it is not licensed for engineering consulting use, only as a teaching tool.)
- SnailZ assists in the design of soil nail walls. Developed by Caltrans.
- Plane Failure Analysis calculates the factor of safety for plane failures in rock and soil slopes where defined discontinuity planes exist. A view of the slope analyzed may be saved as a bitmap with a summary printed alongside. Artificial support (rockbolts, cables, bolts) can be input or the required support can be calculated by entering the desired factor of safety. Developed by E. Bane Kroeger.
- Wedge Failure Analysis is a wedge failure analysis package. It includes a stereonet view of the planes the user inputs and a printable summary of the analysis. The user can input artificial support (rockbolts, cables, bolts) or calculate the required support by entering the desired factor of safety. Developed by E. Bane Kroeger.
- GEO5 Slope Stability The program analyses the stability of generally layered soil slopes.
Liquefaction
- Cyclic 1D is an Internet-based nonlinear finite element program for execution of one-dimensional site amplification and liquefaction simulations (for level as well as mildly inclined sites). Developed by Ahmed Elgamal, Zhaohui Yang, Ender Parra and Ahmed Ragheb.
Site Characterization
- PClass-CPT reads and displays the results of Cone Penetration Tests (CPT). The results are used in estimating soil types and properties at each depth increment, and classify the soil accordingly. Developed by Zhongji Zhang and Mehmet T. Tumay.
Earthquake Hazards
- Deepsoil is a one-dimensional site response analysis program with graphical user-interface that can perform both 1D nonlinear analysis and 1D equivalent linear analysis. Developed by Youssef Hashash.
- USGS offers a large number of software programs for evaluating earthquake hazards.
Deep Foundations
Rock Mechanics
- Stress Transform 3D is a software application for the calculation of the principal stress and stress transformation in 3D space. Developed by Stefanos Kozanis.
- Stereographic Projection is a software application for drawing the plane sections with a (lower) hemisphere. Developed by Stefanos Kozanis.
- GEO5 Rock Stability The program analyses the stability of rock slopes and walls for a specified type of failure, including a planar or polygonal slip surface or soil (rock) wedge.
Retaining Wall Design
- Geo5 Geotechnical software suite Geo5 is capable of solving the following geotechnical tasks: Retaining wall design, Slope stability analysis, Digital terrain model, Foundations design, Sheet piling structures, Soil Settlement, Underground structures.
Other
- GeoStudio 2007 Student Edition is a free version of GeoStudio designed as an aid to learning geotechnical numerical modeling. It includes limited-feature versions of all eight products (SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, SIGMA/W, QUAKE/W, TEMP/W, CTRAN/W, AIR/W and VADOSE/W). (Note that it is not licensed for engineering consulting use, only as a teaching tool.)
Web-Based Applications
Slope Stability
- Seismic Force Slope Stability Calculator utilizes pseudo-static stability analysis to evaluate the factor of safety of a geosynthetic lined slope. Based on the paper by R.M. Koerner and T-Y. Soong (1998).
- RockSlipND, A network demonstration of a rock wedge stability computer program for cylindrically folded rocks. Developed by David M. Doolin.

Textbook Resources
- Donald P. Coduto, author of Foundation Design, Principles and Practices, 2nd Edition, has developed four spreadsheets for common geotechnical applications.
- Muni Budhu, author of Soil Mechanics and Foundations, has developed programs and sample spreadsheets that corresponded with the book.
